In the coming months, that’s what the Quartier Vanier BIA will become. ”We want to brand each of our three main arterials in Vanier with its own look and feel,” said Mark Kaluski, chair of the business association. In 2012 the BIA was successful in expanding its boundaries, from the river to St. Laurent Boulevard, and now includes more than 500 businesses and property owners. The goal of the re-branding exercise is to give each street its own identity”, Kaluski adds.
When taking a closer look at the architectural style and street ambience, it is befitting to rename the three mainstreets Beechwood Village, Montréal Road as a distinct French Quarter, and McArthur the International Avenue. Under the banner of the Quartier Vanier this initiative also allows the BIA to market itself in a new light to attract more visitors, shoppers and investors.
Turning Montréal Road into a French Quarter could potentially attract different types of restaurants and small boutiques as well as focus on the arts. Residents who live around Beechwood Avenue have long been referring to their street as Beechwood Village. McArthur Avenue distinguishes itself with a wide variety of food specialties and services from around the world which explains the idea of rebranding it with an international focus. Creating a new sense of place will enhance the area and provide businesses a new opportunity to promote their locations just like Little Italy and Chinatown have done in Ottawa. Property owners and businesses have responded favourably to this new BIA program.
April 26th was a big day for the Quartier Vanier BIA! Over 50 area merchants participated in the Bride Ideas- The Ultimate Wedding Showcase.
The night started off with guests arriving at the renowned Wabano Centre and after submitting their ticket for a chance to win one of the amazing door prizes, the grand prize, or both, they received a Chi-Chi bag filled with gift certificates from many of our merchants. Delicious hors d’oeuvres were provided courtesy of Todrics Fine Dining and Catering and booths were available for everyone to enjoy. The booths included a photo glamour booth courtesy of Blush Photography, delicious scones from The SconeWitch and 7thQuest Aura readings who predicted exactly who would “Win their Wedding”, but more on that later.
The high energy fashion show featured gowns and accessories from Kimberley Bridal and Fashion Outlet, as well as other area merchants. Hair and makeup for the models were provided by hair stylists and makeup artists from our 3 mainstreets (Montréal Rd, McArthur Ave. and Beechwood Ave.) The models were from the industry as well as community members and local celebrities.
After the fashion show, guests had a chance to win really BIG door prizes including a diamond ring from Time Sharpening Jewelers, a free tuxedo and wedding gown dry cleaning from Monson Cleaners, and a free teeth whitening package from Healthy Smiles Dental Clinic. The Win Your Wedding grand prize – up to $10,000, was won by Christina Orfanos. From our 4 diamond level sponsors, Christina received catering from Todrics Fine Dining & Catering; floral arrangements form Scentimental Flowers ,a wedding gown and veil from Kimberly Wilson Bridal and Fashion Outlet and the reception hall, courtesy of the Wabano Centre.
