ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Owners Juan Carlos Domínguez and Beatriz Salgado

Juan Carlos Domínguez has been working as a chef in Ottawa for over thirty years, but the story of Ay Wey!, which he and his wife Beatriz Salgado opened in November 2025, is more personal than the cooking he did for restaurants like Le Moulin de Provence and the kitchens of the Mexican and Algerian embassies.

“Everything started at home,” Domínguez explains, “We are from Mexico originally, and we always dreamed about our cuisine from back home. We used to invite friends over, so people started trying our food and they’d say, ‘why you don’t open a Mexican restaurant?'”

When Juan and Beatriz started thinking seriously about the idea, they picked McArthur Road for the location. “We always knew that the Vanier area was a great spot for business.”

The restaurant’s signature dish, tacos al pastor, is made with meat carved from a vertical spit that you might recognize from shawarma restaurants. Though Domínguez notes they do use halal meat, the restaurant’s spit was imported from his hometown Mexico City, where it is known as a trompo and is a traditional part of the city’s street cuisine.

Ay Wey! also offers unique vegan and vegetarian options, including a version of tacos al pastor with soy instead of meat, a salad made with fresh cactus leaves and sopa tarasca, a soup from Salgado’s home state, Michoacan.

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Rayne Fisher, Owner

With over a decade of experience in the beauty business, Rayne Fisher knows how to make people look good.

I started doing makeup in the Ottawa area back in 2013, and eyelash extensions in 2018,” she says, “But his location here opened in 2021.” The McArthur Avenue storefront is still going strong, celebrating its five-year anniversary this year.

Besides being the owner of Ciao Bella Beauty Bar, Rayne also runs Rayne Fisher Makeup Artist; her work has been featured in numerous TV and film productions, as well as adding a special touch of glamour to photoshoots, weddings and other events.

Along with “all of the great food,” Rayne cites the close community as one of the best parts of working in Vanier: “My favourite part about my job is getting to work with the local community and meet the wide range of people who come to get beauty services.

A LOVE LETTER

MARCH 2026

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

A Love Letter Paper Boutique
Carol Steuri, Owner

This stationery store was built around a unique concept: It has all the items you expect from a high-end paper boutique―cards, journals, wrapping paper, gifts—but everything in the shop is made of recycled paper or next generation material.

What that means is it’s tree-free,” owner Carol Steuri explains, “So it’s a low-impact alternative to cutting down forests for paper.

Sustainability is an important priority for Steuri – her past endeavours include a post-graduate degree in climate policy and a stint as the Executive director of Green Communities Canada, a community-based climate action group, and Canopy Planet, a group that works with industry partners to protect old-growth and endangered forests from harvesting. The main focus of her work at Canopy Planet was in the area of next-generation paper materials, advocating for many of the same materials that are now featured in her store.

Aside from traditional forms of recycled paper and cardstock, the store sells products made from flax, wheatstraw, offcuts from the fashion industries and recycled fabric. “A lot of different things can make paper. We really don’t need to be making paper out of trees anymore,” Steuri notes.

Variety was also what drew her to the Beechwood Village when choosing a location for the shop. “I meet folks from Vanier, I meet folks from New Edinburgh, I meet folks from Manor Park. I love all the people that come through the door,” says Steuri, “And especially the community that share their stories. Yeah, it just feels like a really good neighbourhood to plant some roots in.

Try out some next-gen paper yourself at 137 Beechwood Avenue!

PIZARRO's

FEBRUARY 2026

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Pat Nicastro
Co-Owner, Pizarro’s Restaurant

Celebrating 35 years of operation in 2026, Pizarro’s is a restaurant that inspires loyalty, and it’s not hard to see why.

We cherish what we make,” Pat says, speaking of the restaurant’s specialty in traditional cooking, good ingredients, and pasta made fresh in-house. The chef and co-owner has been cooking Italian food for more than fifty years, a large portion of that time at Pizzaro’s. The restaurant was established in 1989 as a pizzeria by co-owner and friend Frank Bresolin; Pat joined in 1991 to help expand it to a full restaurant, adding a full array of traditional Italian dishes to the menu. In 2026 they are celebrating the Pizarro’s 35th anniversary.

His favourite part of the job? “I just love to cook,” Nicastro says. “I love going out front and talking with my customers. We actually have four generations of customers at the restaurant… We have people who have been coming here since day one who are still supporting us.”

He has similar thoughts on what makes Vanier great: “It’s a little hidden gem—it’s a small community where everyone knows everyone. People have been living here for years and they haven’t moved out. There’s a reason for that: There’s nowhere else like it.

The same could be said of Pizarros’s Restaurant; come see for yourself at 366 Marguerite Avenue.

AFTER HOURS

JANUARY 2026

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Alysha Sharma, Owner

You may not have seen this restaurant before, and there’s a reason for that: The “ghost kitchen” concept does not have its own storefront, but operates from within Cadman’s Montreal Bagels. After the restaurant’s regular hours, the pop-up restaurant takes over the kitchen to offer a different menu.

The food is a mix of richly topped home-style cooking, Mexican specialties, and Punjabi-style Indian dishes; incidentally, all prepared Halal. “We feature elevated comfort food like tacos, sandwiches, mac and cheese with different kinds of toppings,” owner and head chef Alysha Sharma says, “Your heart feels happy after you eat it.”

She started the business at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, out of a desire to share her passion for cooking and favourite recipes with others.

“My favourite part about Vanier is the community we’ve built here. I have so many regular customers living in the area, and they’re just some of the kindest people you’ll meet.”

Jacobsons

DECEMBER 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Rachel Mathies, General Manager

This store has been providing Vanier with fine foods, from local producers and international suppliers, for nearly two decades.

The specialty grocer opened their first storefront 18 years ago, developing out of founder Susan Jacobson’s love of travel and well-established food import business. They have been at their current location on the corner of Beechwood and Champlain since the winter of 2019, and are still a family business; the current owners are daughter Dominique Jacobson and her husband Marcus.

They offer a wide range of groceries, from fresh bread to frozen meals, but General Manager Rachel Mathies pointed out the store’s extensive cheese wall as one of the things that makes the store stand out. “We do cut-to-order service―it is fairly unique in North America, these days, so we’re really proud of that.

They also have some seasonal items in stock for December: “This time of year we’re definitely specialized in Christmas,” with traditional holiday delicacies, seasonal gift selections, and one-of-a-kind advent calendars.

One of the appeals of the neighbourhood for Mathies, a Vanier resident herself, is how pedestrian-friendly it is: “There are so many places to walk, even just in nature―but anywhere you need to get to, all of the businesses are accessible on foot or by bike.” she says. “And I think that’s really special, in a big city.

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Dr. Jack Hull
Owner, Chiro House

They also have some features to make family visits less stressful for parents and children―stuffed toys, an indoor play structure, dedicated parking, baby-change station and feeding room. “We don’t want to make it just another appointment, we really try to allow kids to feel calm and safe and excited to visit the chiropractor.”

Clinic opened in November 2024, but Dr. Hull began practicing in five years previously. “Me and my partner Lauren, we just moved back from New Zealand,” he said, on the decision to open the practice on Beechwood, “We thought it was a really awesome opportunity.” He mentioned the proximity to the river, its beauty, and the range of great businesses in the Vanier―especially coffee shops―as things that drew him to the area.

COWORKLY

OCTOBER 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Owner Maher Arar

This co-working space provides a place for freelancers, entrepreneurs and small businesses to work without the expense of renting a permanent office. Arar opened Coworkly in May 2018, inspired by his own experiences as a business founder and engineer; he saw a need in Ottawa for a space that catered to start-ups and businesses based on “bootstrapping” a sustainably profitable business model, as opposed to relying on venture capital and fundraising.

The membership-based business holds over 450 square meters of floor space that includes offices, meeting rooms, a large open co-working and event space, a quiet room for distraction-free work, and a recording booth for video or audio. The space also features a kitchenette and self-serve coffee bar with an espresso machine for much-needed caffeine hits.

Investment in Vanier has been one of Arar’s core policies from the start; he sees the co-working space as a way to attract entrepreneurs and businesses to a part of Ottawa they don’t usually visit. Speaking in a 2018 interview with Ottawa Business Journal, he said: “It’s up to me, to people in the area, to contribute to bringing people here.”

The Vanier BIA itself has been a loyal customer of the business; with its office located in the same building and often hosting events in the Coworkly event space.

Take a tour of the space on the third floor at 261 Montreal Road!

LINDEN PIZZA

AUGUST 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Tracey Clark, Owner

While Linden Pizza opened its doors for the first time this year, restaurant owner Tracey Clark is quite familiar with the Vanier neighbourhood.

Clark has lived in the community since 1997. She says she loves the neighbourhood because of how eclectic and diverse it is.

I wanted to bring something to the community where they could gather, have social connections, eat delectable food, and feel like they had a warm embrace,” Clark said.

Clark is known throughout the Ottawa community for being one of the founders of the Bridgehead coffee chain, as well as its former CEO. She now is dedicating herself to her other passions: pizza and the community.

Linden Pizza has eight pizzas on the menu, four with classic tomato sauces and four with green or white sauces.

Among the most popular pizzas are the Valentina, which features pepperoni and hot honey, and the signature Linden, which has roasted leeks, garlic confit, fennel sausage and Gruyère cheese. Clark says that she has been making the Linden for her son for 18 years.

Linden Pizza is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 5 pm to 9:30 pm.

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Mackenzie, Manager

The “ten-thousand-hour rule” is the idea that it takes that much practice to master a skill. While that might sound like a daunting amount of time, you can make a dent in it at 10,000 Hours Piano Rehearsal Studio.

The business has five rehearsal rooms available, rented by the hour. Each room has different pianos, from upright and digital pianos to full-sized grand pianos – even a 19th century fortepiano.

“My favourite part of Vanier is how many small businesses there are here,” manager MacKenzie says, “It seems like there are a lot of people really working hard, and I love that.”

Managing a piano studio has its own rewards, too. “I really enjoy listening to all the music that people play when they rehearse.” She added with a laugh, “Even though I pretend I’m not listening, I’m listening—and everybody’s always so great.”

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Issam, Owner

When Issam and his brother started running Moussa Market in 2008, the store was focused on importing Lebanese food. They still specialize in Lebanese cuisine, but since then they have increased their offering.

“With time we expanded to over all the Middle East from Turkey to Syria, to Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan and some from Egypt.” Issam explained. “Many products come from Europe, especially Eastern Europe, Bulgaria, Greece, Serbia, Macedonia, even Italy.”

If your mouth doesn’t start watering from the cheeses, chocolates, preserves and other delicacies on display, the bakery attached to the store will fix that. Za’atar and Cheese Bakery specializes in authentic Lebanese savory pies and flatbreads, baked fresh every day, with a variety of fillings.

Come to 300 McArthur Avenue for hard-to-find ingredients and hard-to-forget pies!

AZTEC TACOS

MAY 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Team Member: Neri Fragoso

This is an unusual business, and not just for the unique decor. Aztec Tacos is part of a religious community; the staff are volunteers, and the profits go towards supporting the nearby Light of the World church. We spoke with one of those volunteers, Neri Fragoso.

Through Aztec Tacos, we were able to get a bigger church, and also a bigger space for Aztec Tacos,” Neri told us.

Her favourite part of the job is meeting the customers. “They’re always asking me, ‘what do you recommend’ or ‘what is your favourite dish’ or ‘what dish is most popular’,” she says with a smile. “And then I get to see the excitement where they want to try everything.

What did she recommend for us?

Our signature dish is quesabirrias,” she suggested. A taco stuffed with cheese (quesa) and steamed, shredded steak (birria), served with a consommé dipping sauce on the side.

YKO CHICKEN BBQ

APRIL 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Owner: Salimata Sanogo

As the name suggests, the specialty of this restaurant is chicken, which they braise and rub with spices before grilling it with wood charcoal for a distinct flavour – and a delicious aroma you can smell from the street. But the family business also offers a range of other foods, from tilapia to kwanga (fermented and cooked cassava), which are traditional to the Ivory Coast. “The goal was to introduce Ivorian dishes to the community,” says owner Salimata Sanogo. She credits her brother-in-law with the original idea, and the family operated another restaurant on Charlotte Street before moving to their current McArthur location in 2010.

“Vanier is multicultural, and I love its peace and safety,” she says, “Vanier supports us a lot.”

The restaurant uses halal meat and lets customers pick the level of spiciness they want, making it a welcoming experience. They also make their own ginger juice, with lemon juice for extra zest.

DANTE Restaurant

MARCH 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Karim Teyib and Massimo, co-owners

This cucina Italiana was founded in September of 2024, with the goal of bringing traditional and modern Italian cuisine to Ottawa. Dante specializes in fresh pasta, made from scratch—”The way grandmother used to do it,” in the words of co-owner Karim Teyib.

Teyib grew up in Livorno, Western Tuscany, in a home just steps from the Ligurian Sea. He got his start in his uncle’s restaurant, and from there moved on to study hospitality management while working in restaurants in London, Mayfair and South Kensington. When he moved to Ottawa with his wife, he met the restaurant’s other founder, Massimo.

“When we met, we saw we shared the same passion, the same love for the food.” Massimo, another Italian expat, spent his childhood in Modena with his Genoese family. He worked in northern Italy for many years before coming to Ottawa. “For Italians, the only place that we’re happy is at the table. When you have that passion, you want to make the people happy.”

Their favourite part of Vanier? “What I love is this kind of community spirit,” Karim says. “The best part is connecting with the people, building relationships, and making the community stronger.”

MARIO'S FOOD CENTRE

FEBRUARY 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Filipe Correia, Owner

Filipe Correia has been working at Mario’s Food Centre for most of his life. “I took over full time in 2001, but I started working in 1980, when I was twelve years old.” Nephew to the store’s namesake and original owner, Mario Marques, he started out stocking shelves and helping with various chores before beginning to help running the store’s operation in the 90s—while also adding his own passion project, a comic and collectible section called “The Final Stop”.

The food centre, which offers a wide variety of imported Portuguese and Brazilian products and specialty foods, celebrated its 60-year anniversary in 2024; though the business started a few years earlier selling door-to-door to Ottawa’s Portuguese community out of a second-hand station wagon, the MacArthur storefront opened in 1964. More than half a century later, the store is still operating out of that same building, and Correia has no plans to leave Vanier.

“We’re a very diverse community. We don’t just cater to only Portuguese or Brazilians, we have people from all sorts of backgrounds coming in who appreciate our food.”

STARBITE RESTO

JANUARY 2025

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Salim El Ajouz, Owner

Starbite is a classic diner located on Montréal Road, founded on principles of quality, creativity and community.

“I’ve been in small restaurants, big restaurants, fancy restaurants and all kinds of cooking,” says owner and chef Salim El Ajouz. In his thirty years in the industry, he has been the executive chef at several restaurants and can now usually be found in the kitchen in his own restaurant. “I love when I see people happy with the food, with smiles on their faces, so I choose to do my own cooking.”

His passion shows in the menu – the restaurant uses high quality locally-sourced ingredients, original recipes and housemade sauces. While they have a good selection of salads, desserts and appetizers (and some of the best thick-cut fries in the city), the restaurant’s main attractions are their great hamburgers, sandwiches and wraps. Salim recommends the Number 92 – an all-beef patty on a freshly sliced sesame seed roll, topped with bacon, onion, lettuce, pickle, tomato, and a fried chunk of mozzarella, and finished with jalapeño jam, confit garlic aioli and the restaurant’s signature sauce.

DECEMBER 2024

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

Head of Money Advisors Inc., financial advisor since 1997, managing member of a real estate investment group, and co-author of a book on financial literacy (Who Took My Money, released in September 2024), it’s clear that financial planning is a calling for Cathie Orfali.

“The heart of the matter is I love helping people connect their goals with their financial plans,” she said in an interview. “When people are in tune not just with the financial side of things but can connect that to the meaningful things in life, that’s wonderful.” Money Advisors offers a variety of services to help with that, including tax preparation and planning, mortgage services, investment guidance, group and business insurance, and savings plans for retirement, disability, education and more.

As well as running a business in Vanier, she also lives here. “Vanier is a unique neighbourhood because it’s a blend of many different backgrounds, and that brings a vibrance, a richness to the neighbourhood.” She noted that residents care about the area and the people around them. “It has an old-fashioned community feel.”

Orfali has been the President of Money Advisors since 2006, and under her leadership the company has emphasized giving back to the community, both internationally and in Ottawa. This includes something that’s close to the heart of Vanier; for the last four years, Cathie has organized the Vanier Holiday Giveaway. This December event, produced in collaboration with the Vanier BIA, encourages local businesses to give back to the community and bring holiday cheer to the neighbourhood.

“It’s become something like a Christmas market, where people can come out and enjoy the community, have a hot chocolate, hang out with Santa and pick up something they need from the giveaway table.” She encourages locals to invite anyone they know who might need a little help this winter to the event on December 14th. Businesses interested in contributing to the event can drop off donations at the Money Advisors office, or contact Cathie at 613 762 8020.

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

“We change how people feel.” That’s the motto of this massage therapy business, and founder’s favourite part of her job. Anna Bélanger and Associates offers a variety of treatments to ease stress, relieve pain and reduce muscle tension. They serve clients in all stages of life, including pre-natal – Bélanger estimates they have provided over 50 000 pre-natal massages.

Women’s health and pre-natal care were Bélanger’s specialty at the West Coast College of Massage and she made it her focus when she founded the first clinic. Started in 2009, the business is celebrating fifteen years of operation in 2024. The Vanier office is one of three locations in Ottawa, employing 25 registered massage therapists in total.

Anna doesn’t just work in Vanier, she also lives here. Asked what her favourite part of the area is, she replied, “I have to say the community. I love it!” She has shown that love with charitable donations and, in 2020, volunteering with a group that brought supplies to frontline healthcare workers in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has also recently joined the board of the Vanier BIA, supporting our mission to build up Vanier’s businesses and residents.

Ibrahim took over Fontenelle in 2021, renovating the interior and updating the menu with pizza and pasta dishes, while keeping the classic breakfast and lunch dishes that are the restaurant’s specialty.

“I love it here. We have an excellent clientele,” he says of Vanier. “We like our place here, and they like our food.”

ABOUT THIS MERCHANT

This designer consignment store has a unique origin story.

Founded in the 1980s, it emerged from a charity to provide much-needed clothing to refugees arriving from Vietnam. The response from Ottawa locals was so enthusiastic that the founding partners soon ran out of space in their homes, and decided to open a store to sell the excess clothing and raise money directly for the refugees.

The business was sold to current owner Monique Dugas in the early 2000s, who continues to provide clothing and financial aid to charities and new communities in Ottawa.

“I’m very proud to continue this. I want people to know their clothes are going to a good place, to help out,” Monique says. “I’m all about that, helping out.”

With an ever-changing selection thanks to donations and consignments, the store hosts a wide variety of clothing styles and sizes for both men and women, with labels ranging from Akris to Zara.
