Vanier BIA Takes Home Two Provincial Awards at the 2026 OBIAA Awards Gala

Awards & Nominations

Ottawa, ON — April 21, 2026

We’re beyond proud to share that the Vanier BIA was recognized with two provincial awards last night at the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA) Awards Gala, held as part of the 2026 BIA Conference.

Vanier BIA received:

  • 🏆 Award of Excellence — for our Merchant Mondays social media series
  • 🏆 Award of Merit — for our Merchant Hub & Information Kit

These awards celebrate the work, creativity, and heart our team pours into this community every single day — and they belong just as much to the merchants, residents, and partners who make Vanier what it is.

Award of Excellence: Merchant Mondays

Merchant Mondays started with a simple idea: put a camera in front of the people who make Vanier special, and let them tell their own stories.

Each week, we feature one Vanier business — their products, their people, and the reason they chose to set up shop on MacArthur, Montreal Road, or Beechwood. No scripts. No polish. Just real conversations with the owners who are the true heart of our three Mainstreets.

The series went on to reflect the full cultural richness of our neighbourhood — Francophone, Indigenous, Black-owned, women-owned, newcomer-owned, and long-standing family businesses alike. It gave our merchants a voice at a time when so much of business feels disconnected, digital, or AI-generated.

The results speak for themselves:

  • +318% organic reach on Instagram and +395% on Facebook
  • Most reels surpassed 2,000 views, with over half crossing 10,000+ views
  • Newsletter open rates climbed to over 50%, with an 8% click-through rate driven almost entirely by Merchant Monday features
  • A growing waiting list of merchants asking to be featured next

And perhaps our favourite metric of all: the series was produced almost entirely in-house, with staff hours, a CapCut subscription, and a $40 microphone and light kit. Proof that authentic storytelling doesn’t need a big budget — it needs the right people and a genuine reason to hit record.

Award of Merit: Merchant Hub & Information Kit

The Merchant Hub is our one-stop resource centre for the 400+ businesses across our three Mainstreets. It was built to solve a problem we kept hearing: “I don’t know where to look.”

Whether it’s a new owner just getting their keys, or a long-time merchant navigating tariffs, grants, safety concerns, or marketing questions — the Hub puts answers, tools, and support in one clean, easy-to-navigate place. It includes our Welcome Kit for new members, grant and contribution opportunities, accessibility resources, our VBIA 101 resource series, a “Who to Call” guide, and ongoing FAQs tailored to our neighbourhood.

Being recognized for this work means a lot, because it’s the quieter side of what a BIA does — the behind-the-scenes infrastructure that helps businesses grow, stay informed, and feel supported.

Congratulations to Our Fellow Ottawa BIAs

Vanier wasn’t the only Ottawa BIA bringing home hardware last night. We’d like to extend a huge congratulations to our colleagues at the Downtown BIA and the Manotick BIA, who were also recognized at the 2026 OBIAA Awards. Ottawa’s BIAs continue to punch above their weight on the provincial stage, and we’re proud to be in such good company.

Thank You

To our merchants — thank you for trusting us with your stories and your storefronts. To our board, our partners, and our community — thank you for believing in what Vanier can be. To OBIAA — thank you for shining a light on the work happening on Main Streets across Ontario.

This is just the beginning. Onward. 💫
