FAQ — Know Your Neighbourhood
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, completely. The Main Street Metrics Dashboard is provided to you at no cost as part of your Vanier BIA membership. No subscription, no login, no credit card required.
Do I need to be a marketing expert to use it?
Not at all. The dashboard is designed to be visual and easy to read. Each section includes plain-language summaries that explain what the data means. If you can read a chart, you can use this tool.
Does it show data about my specific business?
No — and that’s intentional. The dashboard shows neighbourhood-wide trends, not individual business performance. This protects everyone’s privacy while still giving you useful insights about the area your business operates in.
How current is the data?
The visitor and foot traffic data is updated monthly or quarterly. Demographic data is updated annually. The dashboard is designed to show trends over time, so it’s most useful for spotting patterns rather than reacting to a single week.
Is the dashboard available in French or other languages?
The dashboard is currently available in English. However, the Vanier BIA is here to help — if you have questions about what the data means or how to apply it to your business, reach out to us directly. We’re happy to walk you through it in the language you’re most comfortable with.
How can this actually help my business?
Here are a few real examples: knowing that Thursday is the busiest day could help you schedule more staff. Knowing that most visitors come from within the neighbourhood might mean local flyers outperform a broad social media ad. Seeing that food spending is high but underserved could help you adjust your menu or offerings.
Is my customers' personal information in this dashboard?
No. All data is fully anonymized and aggregated. No individual people, devices, or businesses are identified. You are seeing patterns across the whole neighbourhood — not information about specific people.
Can I use this data in my own marketing or presentations?
Yes. Charts from the dashboard can be downloaded as images and used in your own materials — social media posts, grant applications, presentations, or newsletters. Just include a short note explaining what the chart shows.
I'm not sure where to start. What should I look at first?
Start with the Home tab — it shows the monthly highlights in three simple cards: total visits, busiest day, and busiest time of day. From there, click Visitors to learn more about who is coming to Vanier and where they’re coming from. That alone can change how you think about your marketing.
