Rachel Mathies, General Manager

This store has been providing Vanier with fine foods, from local producers and international suppliers, for nearly two decades.

The specialty grocer opened their first storefront 18 years ago, developing out of founder Susan Jacobson’s love of travel and well-established food import business. They have been at their current location on the corner of Beechwood and Champlain since the winter of 2019, and are still a family business; the current owners are daughter Dominique Jacobson and her husband Marcus.

They offer a wide range of groceries, from fresh bread to frozen meals, but General Manager Rachel Mathies pointed out the store’s extensive cheese wall as one of the things that makes the store stand out. “We do cut-to-order service―it is fairly unique in North America, these days, so we’re really proud of that.

They also have some seasonal items in stock for December: “This time of year we’re definitely specialized in Christmas,” with traditional holiday delicacies, seasonal gift selections, and one-of-a-kind advent calendars.

One of the appeals of the neighbourhood for Mathies, a Vanier resident herself, is how pedestrian-friendly it is: “There are so many places to walk, even just in nature―but anywhere you need to get to, all of the businesses are accessible on foot or by bike.” she says. “And I think that’s really special, in a big city.
